Overview
Your safety is our top priority at The Better Traders. Unfortunately, scammers sometimes target members of online communities, and our Discord server is no exception. We have seen cases of scammers impersonating TBT team members, including our founder Aaron (Moonin Papa), and contacting members directly with fake offers.
To protect you, we have built three layers of warnings into your onboarding experience. This article explains each of them and teaches you how to identify and avoid scams.
This is the single most important thing to remember:
- Aaron or any TBT team member will NEVER reach out to you in private.
- They will NEVER ask for private information like your investments, amounts, or sensitive details.
- They will NEVER offer "VIP" services such as managing your account, copy/trade service, or anything similar.
- They will NEVER ask you to invest in any trade or investment.
- They will NEVER ask you to sign up for any service.
Our Three Layers of Scam Protection
We take this seriously enough that we warn you three separate times before you even start exploring the server.
Layer 1: Your Welcome Email
Before you even join the server, the welcome email that contains your Discord invite link includes a clear warning about scammers. It tells you that none of the TBT team members will ever reach out to you directly over Discord, and that if you receive a direct message or message request, it is highly likely that you have been tagged as a potential target by a scammer.
Layer 2: TBT Bot Direct Message
The moment you join the Discord server, our TBT Bot automatically sends you a Direct Message. This message welcomes you to the server and lays out important community guidelines, including:
- Do not send direct messages to TBT team members (and they will not send them to you either).
- The server is not a replacement for 1:1 Coaching. Post your questions in the appropriate channels so everyone can benefit.
- Do not share content from the server outside of it. Your access will be revoked if you do.
- Respect everyone's privacy and do not invite people to other servers.
Layer 3: The #warning-you-must-read-this Channel
The first channel you see when you enter The Better Traders Club Discord server is called #warning-you-must-read-this. It is marked as a CRITICAL WARNING and contains a detailed Scammer Alert post. This channel exists specifically so that every member reads this warning before exploring the rest of the server.
How to Spot the Real Aaron (Moonin Papa)
Scammers often create fake accounts that look very similar to Aaron's. Here is how to verify you are looking at the real Aaron:
- His username is mooninpapa (exact spelling, no variations).
- His Discord tag is mooninpapa#8209.
- When you hover over the green icon on his profile, you will see a pop-up that says "Originally known as mooninpapa#8209."
- His profile shows The Better Traders Club - Aaron Dishner.
Watch out for fake variations such as:
- "moninpapa" (missing an "o")
- "mooninpapa." (with a dot at the end)
- Any other slight misspelling
What to Do if You Receive a Suspicious Message
- Do NOT respond. Do not engage with the scammer in any way.
- Do NOT share any personal information such as passwords, wallet addresses, or investment details.
- Do NOT click any links they send you.
- Report it to Discord. Right-click the message and select "Report."
- Block the user. Click their name and select "Block."
- Notify our team. Report the incident in the #ask-support channel on our Discord server or email support@thebettertraders.com.
Why Do Scammers Target Our Members?
Scammers join communities like ours to harvest member lists and contact people using fake accounts that look like staff. They know our members are interested in trading and investing, which makes them potential targets for fake "VIP" offers, investment schemes, or phishing attempts. This is not unique to TBT. It happens across many online trading and investing communities.
